This legendary Pontiac Super Duty SD-455 Trans Am is the ultimate rare example. What makes these SD cars special is its glorious unique factory race engine and the low production numbers; only 252 Super Duty T/A’s were made in 1973. 180 of these were equipped with the Turbo-hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. With this set up, Super Duty owners could expect 13.5-second quarter-miles at 104 mph from the factory. In addition and what makes this example extra special is a one off ASC electric sunroof specially commissioned for this car.
Super Duty engines were coded ZJ and W8 for manuals and XD and Y8 for automatics. This is a XD code engine and is Matching numbers, the Super Duty HEADS were responsible of the tremendous horse power that this one of kind engine engine produced, they were derived from RAM AIR IV heads but with better airflow. The exhaust valves were made of Iconel 751, a material developed to withstand the high temperatures of jet turbine blades. SD blocks were reinforced with additional webbing in the main bearing and lifter bore areas, this was to give extra strength to the whole racing-like engine. These engines were underrated from factory to pass emissions and horse power regulations. It was very well known that by opening up the block off plate to allow fresh air flowing through the scoop (which was left sealed to pass noise pollution new regulations) you would get this engine to push close to 400 Hp. This car correctly presents with the block off plate.
This car is optioned with an automatic transmission, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power door locks, tilt steering wheel, electric rear window defroster, custom trim group, lamp group, AM/FM Delco radio and factory console options. The car also features a beautifully restored original 1973 steering wheel, hood bird decal, and factory OEM honeycomb wheels, trim rings, and centers.
This original, numbers matching 1973 Super Duty Trans-Am has been restored to an exceptionally high standard with OEM parts and original colors and finishes. The sheet metal is original to the car and the undercarriage is painted in the correct factory livery.
The car received new paint during its fully documented, comprehensive, concours quality restoration in the original Buccaneer Red and its gorgeous. The body is rust free, laser straight and shows all of the correct factory markings and spot welds. The brightwork has been properly redone, and all stainless polished. The beautiful Endura front end is also in factory fresh condition.
In 1973 while most of Detroit’s muscle cars had succumb new EPA regulations and exchanged horse power for decals, Pontiac’s 455SD Trans Am was not going down without a fight. This beautiful example is a true testament to why this car has remained a legend for 50 years.
