1969 Shelby GT500 Sportsroof

When Shelby's GT500 was introduced in 1967, it sat comfortably at the top of the pyramid of Mustang hierarchy. Under the hood lay a gargantuan 428-cubic inch V-8 that was topped with twin Holley four-barrel carburetors and could produce 360 brake horsepower. Not only did the GT500 offer more in the way of power, but it also offered more in terms of luxury accoutrements than the slightly less powerful sibling did. Unlike the GT350, the GT500 was also offered in both coupe and convertible body styles.

The last year of production for the GT500 was in 1969, even though some late 1969 models were sold as 1970s. That model year also saw the introduction of a restyled Mustang, and the GT500 received all the same changes. The car's overall footprint increased, but the styling was markedly more aggressive.

According to the Shelby American World Registry, this 1969 GT500 is one of 1,536 Sportsroof models built that year, and it was delivered new to Shelby Automotive Co., Inc, of Inkster, Michigan, in 1969. It was used by Shelby as a Marketing vehicle and the GOODYEAR Photo car. It has clearly been very well maintained over the years. In 2011 it received a complete engine rebuild and full body respray in its factory colors. This work was beautifully documented in a bound hard cover book accompanying the car. Just following the refurbishment, The car was sold to its most recent owner and it has been in his care for the bast 9 years.

Finished in Gulf stream Aqua with white body stripes, the car's finish remains smooth and in excellent condition, with little evidence of imperfection. It is reported to be one of 43 GT500 Sportsroofs originally finished in this color with a manual transmission. The fit of the body panels is generally quite good throughout with the exception of the common hood bow that typically occurs on these original hoods over time. The brightwork is quite nice and is possibly original. The black interior is likewise highly presentable and includes notable features, such as a full console with manual gear selector, pushbutton radio, factory roll bar, woodgrain dashboard highlights and folding rear seat. Finally, the engine bay is very nicely detailed with factory-correct finishes, hardware, and components used throughout.

In addition to its powerful 435-horsepower Cobra Jet 428 big block, this GT500 also sports such desirable and noteworthy features as 4 speed manual transmission, power steering and power brakes, Traction-Loc axle with 3.50:1 ratio, AM Radio and Sport deck rear seat, Shelby five-spoke alloy wheels with Goodyear Polyglas GT tires, a space-saver spare tire and the glove box door has been signed by Carol Shelby himself.

The hard bound restoration book and the deluxe Marti report accompany this car.

Like every GT500, it benefits from the inherent collector status and performance associated with the Shelby name itself and, above all, the tremendous value of being part of this exclusive fraternity.
