1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham "Survivor"

One of 400 made in 1957 In its day, Cadillac's Eldorado Brougham was as good as luxury motoring got. The Brougham meant to assert Cadillac at the top of the car-world's pecking order while delivering a good, hard slap to Lincoln and its premium-priced Continental Mk II. In an era when even Rolls-Royces cost $10,000, the Eldorado Brougham started at $13,074 . There were 40 choices-paint color and interior fabric, for example-but no options. This Cadillac was the epitome of American luxury. Just 400 examples were built in 1957. Typically reserved for only movie stars and the wealthy elite, you can see why this limited production car was far more expensive than any other American auto. This car had more upscale features than any other competitor. It was GM's answer to the Mark II by Ford Motor Division. No car was priced higher than the Mark II, that is, until the beautiful Eldorado Brougham came along. This Brougham stands out from the pack with its brushed stainless steel roof, center opening/suicide doors, beautiful taillights in the unique rear fins, no center roof pillars, and a lower stance. This car is loaded with luxury options including air conditioning, power windows, power driver's seat with memory, electric door locks, heated seats, a trunk lid that is electrically raised and lowered, auto dimming headlights, polarized sun visors, and a glove box with fold out shelf with mirror and tissue dispenser, to name a few. Interestingly, this was the world's first production car to use air suspension, giving this classic a smooth ride. The 1957 is powered by a hefty 365 cid V8 with 2 - 4bbl carburetors, putting out 325hp. This motor is mated to a four speed Hydra-matic automatic transmission. For such a large vehicle, this was considered fast in its day. GM Design boss Harley Earl combined features from a couple of Motorama show cars and created this incredible vehicle.

This example is car #300 and has remained in the care of the same family since 1974. As a testament to its continuous care, it remains operational today. The engine starts instantly, sounds very quiet and smooth. The power windows and power door locks operate as does the power trunk. The air ride suspension was replaced with springs many years ago but still rides nice and smooth. The car remains remarkably rust free but the aging paint has seen its best presentation many years ago. The original carpet has faded to an unusual shade of green but still reveals it original chocolate brown tone in areas shaded from the sun. The seating surfaces has been re-upholstered and still look great along with maintaining comfortable support. All 5 original wheels are present and the trunk still sports its original fabric lining.

This incredible statement of American automotive innovation has survived the rigors of time and weather and presents with a patina that no other method can duplicate. The car be sympathetically improved and enjoyed or a full restoration could be justified on an example as solid and complete as this.
